Protest in Little Jamaica: Exploring Empowerment Through Design

Isaac Soares

Petros Babasikas, Advisor

My project explores public space as a tool for empowerment in Little Jamaica. I navigate interconnected community challenges such as racial inequities, disinvestment, and safety. Through extensive research and engagement with residents, I aim to contribute to the discourse on urban development. The central thesis of my project is to leverage design and policy to empower community leaders and advocates in addressing neighbourhood issues. I propose an alternative development model that prioritizes public spaces and community institutions, like a market, neighbourhood planning office, and advocacy center. Through this project, I aim to challenge conventional development models and advocate for a community-centred approach to urban planning.
