ZERO CARBON HYBRID WOOD TOWER PROTOTYPE

DIALOG and EllisDon are working to address the challenge of tall timber buildings, which are a critical part of the solution to climate change. Currently, the race to design the tallest all-timber building obscures the most important goal of using mass timber: to make significant reductions in carbon emissions by maximizing the overall use of sustainable harvested wood. Moreover, tall and supertall buildings of all shapes and forms have been extensively explored by architects and engineers. Mark Gaglione and the DIALOG structural team responded with an innovative idea: the patent-pending Hybrid Wood Floor System (HTFS). The HTFS can be deployed in buildings of any size, form, or height, and the 105 storey prototype is a good example of how the HTFS can be deployed in a mixed-use supertall building form. OSSTF HEADQUARTERS AND MULTI-TENANT COMMERCIAL BUILDING

This 3-storey 124,000 SF mass timber project will seamlessly integrate tenant opportunities with the revitalization of the OSSTF/FEESO’s existing office space in Toronto. It features Glulam beam construction with a central triple height atrium rising to meet a skylight formed by a Glulam diagrid. Low Impact Development measures will manage stormwater on the site which sits on the Don Valley ravine edge. Designed to meet LEED Platinum certification.

77 WADE

77 Wade will be Canada’s tallest timber office building when it’s completed in 2022. The eight-storey, “code-breaking” structure not only surpasses current height restrictions, it also achieves 78% exposed wood, allowing future tenants to benefit from the building’s materials.

77 Wade demonstrates what’s possible when a team of creative thinkers challenge themselves to think outside the box – or code. This prototypical building provides a replicable and scalable model for future commercial developments that can share in the biophilic and carbon sequestration benefits of wood construction.

MCEWEN SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

LGA Architectural Partners designed Laurentian University’s McEwen School of Architecture to prepare young architects for the critical design issues of the 21st Century. The first phase of the project adapted two historic structures: a timber rail shed turned market building into the “FabLab,” where traditional and contemporary building methods are explored, and a former masonry Canadian Pacific Railway ticketing and telegraph office that now serves as faculty offices. The school’s second phase realized two new buildings: a steel and concrete wing that houses the “Crit Pit” and design studios, and a cross-laminated timber (CLT) building for the auditorium and library.

80 ATLANTIC

Designed by Quadrangle, 80 Atlantic Avenue in Toronto is Ontario’s first mass timber commercial building in over a hundred years. The new, 90,000-square-foot, five-storey building completes a courtyard with 60 Atlantic (also realised by Quadrangle) to create a paired commercial development. The first level of the building is concrete instead of timber because of the larger floor spans required and necessary separation between office and retail use. The upper floors are composed of glulam beams and columns, on which are installed nail-laminated timber (NLT) floor decking panels.
