A Failure to Understand is a series of paintings centered around language and text, particularly the Urdu script. These paintings utilize unreadable, indecipherable text as a medium to explore the loss and erasure of language and histories. These paintings highlight an inability to communicate using Urdu script that is broken apart, scattered into pieces, unable to perform its central function of communication. The text, much like language, can be misunderstood and misread, creating a failure to understand.
