Joyce Zhao is an multimedia artist deeply engaged with themes of memory, cultural heritage, and identity, using traditional Chinese lacquer techniques to create work that connects past and present. Her practice interests include painting, drawing, installation art. Joyce has studied lacquerware’s ancient processes and symbolism, drawing inspiration from both historical artisans and contemporary artists like Yao Bangliang and Xu Bing. Integrating architectural motifs with personal narratives, Joyce’s work reimagines traditional craft for modern storytelling, blending layers of lacquer, mother-of-pearl, and eggshell to capture the evolving nature of memory. Their practice embodies a journey of preservation and innovation, challenging viewers to reflect on how memories, both personal and cultural, inform and transform us.
