Master of Forest Conservation (MFC) program
- Domestic applicants must complete an appropriate bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, with an average of at least mid-B from a recognized university prior to the start of the academic term applied to.
- International applicants should hold an appropriate bachelor’s degree or its equivalent as assessed by the University of Toronto. Use the International Credentials Equivalencies Tool to see which international credentials are required for masters programs at U of T.
Master of Science in Forestry (MScF) program
- An appropriate bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent from a recognized university (check the School of Graduate Studies admissions site for information on equivalent international qualifications)
- An average of at least a mid-B in the final year of your program (a B+ average is required for the Environmental Studies Collaborative Specialization)
PhD program
- An appropriate master’s degree from a recognized university in a discipline appropriate for the intended field of doctoral study and research (check the School of Graduate Studies admissions site for information on equivalent international qualifications)
- An average of at least A- in the Master’s program.
Occasionally, currently-registered MScF students with an average of at least A- in the first year of the MScF program who have demonstrated superior research capabilities may be considered for transfer to our PhD program before the end of their first year in the MScF program.
In exceptional circumstances, an extraordinarily strong applicant with an appropriate bachelor’s degree from a recognized university may be approved for admission directly into the PhD program. Applicants who have not completed a Master’s program and who wish to apply under this category should select the “PhD (direct entry)” degree program.

When completing the online application form, you will be required to enter contact information for three referees. Once your payment is received, the system will send invitations to your referees asking them to complete the referee report. Please speak to your referees ahead of time to confirm their availability and willingness to participate before submitting their contact details on the online application form.
Statement of Interest
If you’re applying for the MFC program, you’re required to submit a 250-500 word letter of interest describing the relevance of your background and interests to the program and your reasons for applying.
MScF and PhD applicants are required to submit a letter of intent indicating the following:
- The forestry sub-field in which you wish to conduct research (if the area of interest is broad, such as forest biology, a particular area should be specified, e.g., forest soils, forest entomology, etc.)
- A brief description of your proposed research
- 2 to 4 courses relevant to your proposed research
- Why you wish to obtain your MScF/PhD degree
- A Faculty member you would prefer to fulfill the role of your supervisor
