If your primary language is not English and you graduated from a non-Canadian university where the language of instruction and examination was not English, you must demonstrate facility in the English language to be considered for admission to our programs.

Please visit the School of Graduate Studies admissions site for information about acceptable tests you can take to prove your facility in English.  When you register for your English language test, if you indicate the University of Toronto as a recipient of your electronic test scores, official test scores will be reported and loaded directly to our system.   If your official test scores are not being sent to us electronically, please submit your English language test score report with your application documentation to the Faculty. We cannot offer you admission unless and until the language requirement is met.

Exemptions:

If you completed a program of study at a university where the language of instruction and examination was English, but English is not your primary language, please submit an official statement from your institution confirming the language of instruction and examination.

You are not required to complete an English-language facility test if you are a Canadian citizen who studied at a Canadian university where the language of instruction is French.
