Project Title: Panelized, Prefabricated and Modular Construction Value Chain and Regulatory Map

The Mass Timber Institute is a multidisciplinary research institute based in the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto’s St. George Campus. The Institute’s central mission is to position Canada as a global leader in mass timber research, education, and development through advancing collaboration among industry professionals, researchers, academics, and students in construction, engineering, forestry, and architectural fields, among others.

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Researcher to join our esteemed research team and contribute to groundbreaking engineering research projects in construction value chains. This position offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with leading experts in the field and make significant contributions to the advancement of science and technology.

The project is in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ontario to investigate the value chain and regulatory map of panelized, prefabricated and modular construction in Ontario. Multiple tasks are foreseen in the project’s lifetime resulting in 2 annual reports. A scientific publication of the outcomes is highly encouraged. Moreover, undergraduate and graduate students will be involved in supporting the activities of the research project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in wood market analysis (economy) construction sector (industrial and civil engineering), and supply chain.
  • Design and execute surveys to collect data and map the entire value chain, especially in the offsite wood construction sector.
  • Report on success stories and evidence from mature regions in Europe.
  • Develop business models and identify challenges in the value chain.
  • Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers.
  • Stay current with the latest developments in the field through literature review and participation in conferences.
  • Contribute to the publication of research findings in reputable journals and conferences.
  • Assist in grant proposal writing and securing research funding.
  • Mentor and guide junior researchers as needed.

Qualifications:

  • A degree in Forestry, Economy, and Engineering.
  • Proven experience in conducting research, with a strong publication record.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in quantitative data analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.

Additional Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in Modelling, econometrics, and value chain analysis is an asset.
  • Previous experience in relevant research projects.
  • Familiarity with business model development and evaluation.
